Turning Red has garnered a wealth of positive reviews from critics, and for good reason. The coming-of-age story from Pixar follows teenager Mei Lee, a hard-working young girl who struggles to balance her life with friends at school and her love of pop music with her life at home like a dutiful daughter.
To make matters worse, a family curse means that whenever Mei has a fit of extreme emotion, she turns into a red panda. Mei must navigate this new experience, and learn how to be her most authentic self.
Digital Spy gave the film five stars, and if that isn’t enough to sway you it currently holds an impressive 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. Unlike the recent release Encanto, Turning Red is only available on Disney+.

The downside of this is that you have to have a subscription if you want to see the film. If you aren’t already subscribed, you can sign up to Disney+ for £7.99 per month, or £79.90 for an entire year, which does work out cheaper than if you were to pay monthly for 12 months.
Unfortunately, there’s no way to get a free trial of Disney+ at the moment, but you might be able to save some money with mobile network provider O2, which offers six months of Disney+ free for new and upgrading customers.
If you already have O2 but aren’t looking to upgrade, you can simply add Disney+ to your existing plan and it will give you £2 off of your monthly bill.
Samsung is also running a deal until June 11, where customers who purchase one of its Galaxy S21 FE handsets can claim three months of Disney+. You can find out more about that particular promotion here.
We would highly recommend Turning Red. The film stars Rosalie Chiang as Mei and Sandra Oh as her mother Ming, and their relationship is one of the emotional backbones of the film.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Oh said it was co-writer-director Domee Shi’s singular vision that helped forge such a powerful final product.
Having a relationship that wasn’t perfectly rectified was important to Shi, who told us: “In real life, I didn’t feel like there was a neat bow tied around my relationship with my mom. And we wanted to be able to speak to the truth about that, about that parent-child relationship and how it’s always good to have like a push and pull, and there’s always going to be conflicts but you’re going to love each other even from a distance.”
While the mother-daughter relationship is pivotal to the film, so is Mei’s relationship with her friends – and, of course, to herself. Chiang told us that she related to Mei’s messiness. “Making mistakes, having all these imperfections, trying my best to embrace the red panda. I was able to try empathise with Mei and realise, ‘Oh, we’re not that different,’ and convey her as authentically as I can.”
For all the recent, ahem, discourse about the cultural and gender specificity of the story, what Turning Red does – and what we argue all emotionally resonant films do – is create a universal experience through the specific. We can’t recommend it more highly.

If you went through puberty between the years 1998 and 2005, then you simply must watch Turning Red, Pixar’s delightful new animated film coming to Disney+ this weekend.
Directed by Domee Shi, who co-wrote the screenplay with Julia Cho, this coming-of-age fantasy question dares to ask the question: What if a 13-year-old girl turned into a giant red panda every time she felt emotional? Newcomer Rosalie Chiang voices the protagonist Mei, who is burdened by a family curse that turns her into a panda whenever she feels angry, upset, or even just really, really excited about her favorite boy band.
Sandra Oh provides the voice of her overprotective mother, Ming Lee, whom Mei is expected to obey without question. But Mei has another support system in her life, that she finds to be a much bigger comfort through puberty than her mother—her friends.
Turning Red is a sweet, funny, and extremely relatable movie to anyone who suffered through the agony of puberty—aka pretty much everyone. Read on to find out how to watch Turning Red, including the Turning Red release date and the Turning Red release time on Disney+.
